Consistency

2 Jan

Ah, consistency, and I’m not talking about the density and texture of my poop. No, I mean consistent action over time including, but not limited to, posting to this site, drawing, exercising and working on astrophotography.

As the eponymous owner of this site I ask myself, “What is this site for?” I mean, is it a blog, a gallery of my work; is it for self-promotion, or life-blogging? Other questions arise, like did I use the semi-colon correctly in the previous sentence. I’ve tried writing interesting posts about interesting thing that I’ve done lately, but they turn out to be not very… interesting. There are so many half-finished draft posts sitting in my WordPress dashboard that it’s a little discouraging.

More generally, consistent repeated action is something I find very difficult. By action, I mean more than just sitting at home wasting time by playing video games, reading comics, watching tv, eating or browsing the internet. I’m sure I’m not the only person who has trouble with this sort of thing, if every self-help book ever is any indication.

I could blame it on my lack of work, the lazy atmosphere here, or any number of things, but really I’ve always been a big slacker. I guess the secret is that I don’t mind working hard on something, but only when it’s absolutely necessary, and even then I have the tendency to quit after a few months.

For instance, when I lived in San Diego, I rode my bike 30 miles a day over some pretty hilly terrain (and down a freeway). But, that was because it was cheaper and less frustrating to bike to work than drive. I couldn’t ride my bike 30 miles a day now, because I don’t have a reason to even though I like riding my bike.

In San Francisco this past summer I rode my bike 20 miles and day, worked 50 hours a week and went to school five days a week and aced my class. I think I do things like that just to prove that I can do them, but once I’ve done that I could care less about it.

I guess I like the challenge, but only sometimes.

Also, I hate posts like this. Self-analysis is stupid.

So anyway, I guess this might fall under the umbrella of New Year’s resolutions, but I guess I need to set myself the challenge of doing certain things regularly. Let’s not get too ambitious, eh? Post here once a week. Exercise at least once a day (whacking off does not count). Use my telescope regularly. These resolutions are going to be broken real soon.

I’m putting a few photo posts in the queue. Nothing spectacular.

Also I like that I’m the only site you link to. Clearly I am all that is worth reading on the internets.
